English Teacher
Janice Chui
'Hello, I am Janice, a passionate English teacher who has been teaching for 5 years, privately and in various learning centres including the British Council. Other than a teacher, I am also an inquisitive student who majors in Linguistics, and minors in Education and Spanish at the University of Hong Kong. Born and raised in Hong Kong, my background and education have helped me include both conventional ways of teaching and more innovative and interactive strategies.
My 18 years in local schools has made me deeply reflect upon the education system in Hong Kong, which is one of the reasons why I do not teach in the traditional way. I do not believe in force-feeding and spoon-feeding. That's why my classes are student-based instead of teacher-based. I take into account students' interests and feelings in order to design materials and curricula that fit them specifically according to their learning needs and personalities. I try to include multi-media materials, real-life objects, daily life experience, games, books and songs as much as possible to maximise their learning experience.
As an English teacher, it is important to equip students with subject knowledge, which is definitely an essential part of my teaching. However, unlike conventional teachers, I believe learning is and has to be fun. The action of and the love of learning outweighs the amount of knowledge students have to cramp in their brains. The most important lesson one can learn about is the values and attitudes of life. Everyone is born to love and enjoy learning. Everyone is curious in nature. Education is worth nothing if it is boring and not fun for our next generation.
In order to pursue my dream in the Education industry, I am planning to take CELTA, which is an international teaching English as a second language (ESL) qualification provided by the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom in July 2018.
