1. Be/keep somebody in the dark Keeping someone in the dark means keeping a secret from that person.
Example sentence: I was in the dark the whole time and you didn’t even bother to tell me about it? How long did you want to keep this secret from me for?
2. Beat around the bush This phrase means to go around in circles and avoid talking about the topic.
Example sentence: Stop beating around the bush! If you have something to say, say it and say it now. I don’t have much time for you.
3. Get to the bottom of the matter Getting to the bottom of something means to investigate and discover the truth about something.
Example sentence: The real murderer is still on the run but don’t worry as I promise you I will get to the bottom of it and solve this as soon as possible.
4. Cherry-pick To cherry-pick something means to pick only the best people or things from a group.
Example sentence: The reason why the dishes in our restaurant are so expensive is that we cherry-pick the best ingredients from local sources only.
5. Turn a blind eye This phrase means to pretend to not notice something.
Example sentence: The government seems to turn a blind eye to the horrible living conditions of the less-privileged but work has to be done if we ever want any improvement in their life at all.
